Tips on Caring Leather Furniture

Leather furniture can look beautiful and age gracefully. It is a big investment. So let’s take care of it. Here are some maintaining tips.

Wipe the leather sofa down regularly with a clean, dry cloth. The basic care routine for leather upholstery is simply wiping the furniture down with a dry cotton cloth. This will remove dust from the leather and keep it looking its best.

For spills, immediately use a dry cloth to blot and let it air-dry. It is important to blot instead of wiping as you want to get all the moisture out instead of spreading it. Try that with fabric too.

Keep the leather away from direct sunlight and the fireplace. Remember that leather was once the skin of an animal and just like too much sun and heat are no good for your skin, they are not all that welcome for leather as well. If your leather sofa set sits close to a sunny window, the use a window treatment. Keep your leather furniture away from the fire place and at a spot that is cooler.

If leather furniture is brand new, protect it right off the bat with a professionally applied leather protector. There are also products available for do-it-yourselfers on the after-market. If the furniture is older, have it cleaned professionally and apply the leather protector. Keep the furniture free of dust and occasionally wipe it with a barely damp cloth.
